What is F.E.A.R?
F.E.A.R is the mental movie that plays in our heads when we imagine the worst-case scenario. It’s the voice that says, “What if I fail?” or “What will people think?”—even though there’s no evidence to support those thoughts. When we allow those false expectations to take control, we shrink back, avoiding opportunities for growth, joy, and transformation.
The Science of Fear
Fear has roots in our biology. Our nervous system is designed to protect us through the fight-or-flight response. This is useful if you’re facing real danger, but in everyday life, it often gets hijacked by imagined threats—like giving a presentation, applying for a new job, or trying a new workout. When this happens, our breath becomes shallow, our muscles tighten, and our thoughts race.
That’s where the Kairos method comes in: by activating the breath and inner core, we can calm the nervous system, reset our focus, and see fear for what it really is—an illusion.
Common Types of False Expectations
Fear of Judgment: Worrying about how others perceive us when, in reality, most people are focused on themselves.
Fear of Failure: Believing one setback defines us, rather than seeing it as a step toward growth.
Fear of the Unknown: Avoiding opportunities simply because the outcome isn’t certain.
Repurpose Fight or Flight and Conquer F.E.A.R.
Overcoming fear doesn’t happen by ignoring it. It happens by bringing mindful awareness to it. Here are five strategies you can start using today to repurpose fight or flight caused by F.E.A.R:
Awareness: Acknowledge the fear and name it. “I’m afraid of speaking in public” is the first step to moving past it.
Breath & Body Connection: Slow, nasal breathing activates the body’s relaxation response and shifts you out of fight-or-flight.
Reframing Thoughts: Transform “What if I fail?” into “What if I grow?” or “What if I succeed?”
Take Small Steps: Expose yourself to the challenge gradually, building resilience along the way.
Community Support: Surround yourself with people who lift you up, not those who feed the fear.
